I.     Policy

For the safety of all WSSB employees who handle incoming mail or packages, the following procedures outline how to identify and respond to suspicious mail and/or packages received at WSSB.

II.    Mail Processing/Sorting Procedures

When mail arrives for the WSSB, assigned staff will sort items according to how they are addressed.

  • Items addressed to specific individuals or departments will be routed accordingly.
  • Items addressed only to WSSB, with no individual or department listed, will be opened by staff to determine the appropriate destination.

III.   Safety Procedures

When receiving mail for the WSSB, staff must be cautious of opening packages and letters that are:

  • unexpected or from an unknown sender.
  • addressed to someone who no longer works at or affiliated with WSSB.
  • handwritten with no return address or with a return address that cannot be verified.
  • lopsided, bulky, or unusually shaped.
  • sealed with excessive tape.
  • postmarked with excessive postage.

If you encounter a suspicious item, please take the following precautions:

  • Do not handle the letter or package if you suspect contamination.
  • Don’t shake it, bump it, or smell it.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Contact local law enforcement immediately by calling 911.
