The WSSB Food Service Department has many exciting changes for the 2012-2013 school year. This year we will no longer be a satellite kitchen of the Center for Deafness and Hearing Loss, and all meals will be produced here at WSSB in the remodeled kitchen area.
We will be able to provide our students, staff, and visitors with meals that are healthy, fresh, and more appealing. Last year, we formed a committee that developed a Wellness Policy in regards to nutrition and physical fitness. This policy talks about healthy food choices and the need for exercise in order to keep fit. The policy can be viewed here..
The USDA has changed the nutritional guidelines for lunch beginning July 1, 2012. Food service operators are now required to offer more whole grains, fruits, vegetables and meals with less salt and fat content. We will embrace these changes to ensure our students receive nutritionally sound, good tasting meals that also reflect our new Wellness Policy.
Our menus this year will have several healthy fruit and vegetable choices. Next year we will be required to make healthy changes to the breakfast program. The USDA is also requiring all schools across America to have a minimum lunch price of $2.51, so a paid lunch will cost $2.55 this year. A reduced price lunch will continue to cost 40 cents. This will bring our lunch pricing more in line with your student’s home school district.
We will be serving lunch using the USDA guidelines for Offer verses Serve, which give the students more freedom of choice over what goes on their lunch tray.
We are looking forward to these new challenges and to serving the students this year.
Questions concerning your child’s lunch account balance are handled by our business office.
Thanks for your time,
Bob Lonnee – Food Manager
