1. Hazel tenBroek Merit Scholarship $2,000: Legally blind state resident pursuing a full-time college or graduate course of study.

2. Beverly Prows Memorial Scholarship $3,000: Legally blind state resident pursuing a full-time college or graduate school course of study.

Recipients of these scholarships need not be members of the National Federation of the Blind. Winners are brought to the federation convention in July at federation expense; that funding is in addition to the scholarship grants.

Deadline for all scholarship applicants is March.

1. AMERICAN ACTION FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students studying or planning to study at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $10,000.

Duration: 1 year - recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

2. FRANK WALTON HORN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students studying or planning to study at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply; applicants may enter any field of study, but preference is given to those studying architecture or engineering. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: This scholarship is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year - recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Funds for this scholarship are provided by Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Barnum, the mother and stepfather of Catherine Horn Randall.

3. KUCHLER-KILLIAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for undergraduate or graduate study to legally blind students.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year- recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

This scholarship was endowed by Junerose Killian, in memory of her parents, Charles Albert Cutter and Alice Helen Kuchler.

4. MELVA T. OWEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students studying or planning to study at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility: Any undergraduate student who is legally blind is eligible to apply. Scholarships, however, will not be awarded for the study of religion or solely to further general or cultural education; the academic program should be directed towards attaining financial independence. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: This scholarship is $4,000.

Duration: 1 year - recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

5. MOZELLE AND WILLARD GOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students interested in pursuing studies at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Eligibility: Applicants must be legally blind and attending or planning to attend an institution of higher education. Selection is based on academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications up to 2 additional years.

This scholarship was endowed by the former president of the National Federation of the Blind of California, Sharon Gold, in memory of her parents.

6. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND EDUCATOR OF TOMORROW AWARD

Purpose: To recognize and reward blind students who have the potential to be great teachers.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. They must be planning for a career in elementary, secondary, or postsecondary teaching. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The award is $3,000.

Duration: The award is presented annually.

Number Awarded: 1 each year;

7. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND HUMANITIES SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To encourage blind persons to pursue studies in the humanities.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. They must be interested in studying the traditional humanities (e.g., art, English, foreign languages, history, philosophy, or religion) at the postsecondary level. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

8. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND SCHOLARSHIPS

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students studying or planning to study at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: Stipends are either $4,000 or $3,000. Duration 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

Number awarded: 16 each year: 2 for $4,000 and 14 for $3,000.

Deadline: March of each year.

9. HERMIONE GRANT CALHOUN SCHOLARSHIPS

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to female blind students interested in pursuing studies at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Eligibility: Women undergraduate or graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply. Selection is based on academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $3,000 per year. Duration 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications up to 2 additional years.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Deadline: March of each year.

10. HOWARD BROWN RICKARD SCHOLARSHIPS

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students studying or planning to study law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or the natural sciences at the postsecondary level.

Eligibility: Undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind are eligible to apply if they are studying or planning to study law, medicine, engineering, architecture, or the natural sciences. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications
a second and third time.

11. COMPUTER SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to legally blind students pursuing a degree in computer science.

Eligibility: Eligible to apply for this scholarship are legally blind students who are pursuing or planning to pursue a degree in computer science. Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic excellence, service to the community, and financial need.

Financial Data: This scholarship is $3,000.

Duration: 1 year; recipients may resubmit applications a second and third time.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Deadline: March of each year.

FLOYD CALLWARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to blind students in New Hampshire who wish to pursue postsecondary education.

Eligibility: Any legally blind resident of New Hampshire or any legally blind resident of another state pursuing postsecondary education in New Hampshire is eligible to apply. The candidate must be enrolled in or prepared to return to a trade school, vocational/technical school, junior college, college, or professional/graduate school. Both continuing and reentry students may apply.

Financial Data: The stipend is $1,000. The funds may be used to purchase education-related equipment or services or to defray the costs of tuition, board, and other school fees.

Duration: 1 year.

Special features: This program was established in 1990.

Number awarded: 1 or more each year.

Deadline: July of each year.

1. LAWRENCE "MUZZY" MARCELINO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for graduate or undergraduate education to blind students in California.

Eligibility: Any legally blind student may apply for a scholarship but must attend the convention of the National Federation of the Blind of California. Selection is based first on academic merit and second on financial need.

Financial Data: This scholarship is $1,500. Duration 1 year.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Deadline: March of each year.

2. JERROLD M. DRAKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for undergraduate or graduate education to blind students in California.

Eligibility: Any legally blind student may apply for this scholarship. Selection is based first on academic merit and second on financial need.

Financial Data: The stipend is $1,000.

Duration: 1 year.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Deadline: March of each year.

NATIONAL FEDERATION OF THE BLIND OF VERMONT SCHOLARSHIP

Purpose: To provide financial assistance for postsecondary education to blind students in Vermont.

Eligibility: Any legally blind college student attending a Vermont postsecondary institution is
eligible to apply. Awards are based on academic excellence, community service, and financial need.

Financial Data: This award is $500.

Duration: 1 year.

Special features: Applications are available from the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation, P.O. Box 2000, Winooski, VT 05404, (800) 642-3177 or (802) 655- 9602. Applications are submitted to the National Federation of the Blind of Vermont, which presents the awards at its meeting in December.

Number awarded: 1 each year.

Deadline: March of each year.

The National Federation of the Blind has affiliates in each state that may have scholarships for state residents who are blind, or blind students attending schools in that state.
